Word note / Compounding

Made to order means what?

This word describes how a medicine is made. It does not settle which ingredients may be used.

A medicine made for a need

Compounding means having a pharmacist or doctor prepare a medicine to order instead of using a drug company’s finished product. FDA’s compounding explanation

Compounding can help meet a patient’s medical need when an approved product cannot, according to FDA guidance checked September 26, 2026. FDA’s compounding explanation

Does that mean FDA checked it?

No. Medicines prepared to order do not have FDA approval. Before these medicines are offered to patients, the FDA does not assess their quality, safety or benefit, according to guidance checked September 26, 2026. FDA’s compounding explanation

The Semax question is separate

A pharmacy cannot start with any ingredient it chooses under the federal compounding rules, as of September 26, 2026. FDA’s pharmacy ingredient rules

Individuals or groups requested the FDA’s permission to use Semax as an ingredient for medicines prepared to order, then withdrew those requests. FDA’s compounding record

Taking back a request does not give regular pharmacies permission to make Semax medicines, under rules checked September 26, 2026. FDA’s pharmacy ingredient rules

Can a prescription settle that?

The ingredient rules still apply even with a prescription. Ask the person writing it: “Which current rule allows a pharmacy to make this medicine for me?”

Get a clear product description

Ask who would make the medicine and what form of Semax it would contain. Ask for that reply in writing.

Keep the product description beside the explanation of its status. If either is missing, pause the decision while you ask again.
